　その頃、エリザベスと執事は、『カラスの牙』という題名のテレビ

ドラマを見ている。

Meantime, Elizabeth and the Steward are watching a TV drama

titled “The Fang Of Crow”.

　「世の中には不可解な人もいるものね。お金があるのに万引き

するなんて．．．」

“There are not a few strange people who shoplift while they

have enough money in this world...”

　「そうですな。けっこう見た目も綺麗だし、素敵な家に住む金持ち

のお嬢様が、『幸せになりたい』と言ってリストカットを繰り返す。

一般の人々には単なる贅沢な悩みとしか受け止められないかも

しれませんな。」

“I think so, too. It’s so weird to see rather a pretty,

rich girl living in a nice house repeat cutting her wrist.

Most people would just think she is asking too much.”

　「このヒロインも、けっこう良い人のようだけど、この態度は少し

甘過ぎると思う人もいるかもしれないわね。麻薬中毒患者の禁断

症状を見るに見かねて麻薬を与え続けて、結局廃人にしてしまう

ようなものだと思うわ。

“I think this heroine is rather good, but a little too in-

dulgent. It’s almost like continuing giving drug to a drug

addict, being unable to stand seeing her withdrawal symp-

toms, only to make her a disabled person after all.

　私が思うに、この少女は暇過ぎるのよ。たとえばクラブ活動だとか、

何か熱中できるものを持てば良いのだわ。そうね、スポーツとか、

体を動かすことが良いかもね。適当に気が紛れて。

I think she just finds her time unmanageable. She should

have something to devote herself to, for example, club activ-

ities, and so on. It would be the most effective to be enthu-

siastic for sports to take her mind off her troubles.

　そのほうがむしろ良い解決方法だったかもしれないわね。ご両親

もお仕事でお忙しそうだったし。」

I think they should rather have solved this problem in this

way. Then they didn’t have to bother the busy parents so

much.”

　「そうですな。平気で万引きするのも、お金に不自由したことが

ないゆえかもしれませんな。」

“I think so, too. I think she thinks nothing of taking other

people’s things because she herself has never been short

of money.”

　「そうだとしか思えないわ。っていうか、自ら努力を重ねて何かを

作り上げた経験がないからなのかもしれないわ。

“I cannot help guessing so, too. Or, just because she has

never had such an experience where she created something

after making so much effort on her own.

　そうね、たとえば、熟練するのにかなりの年月と労力とを要する

何かに没頭させて、苦労に苦労を重ねて何かを創らせてみるという

のはどうかしら？そして、経済的にギリギリの状態で、それを販売

させてみるのよ。そうすれば、ものを作ることの苦労も思い知る

だろうし、自分が苦労して作り上げたものを無断で取られることの

悔しさも思い知るものよ。

So, how about making her devote herself to something which

requires rather long time and much energy to get skillful,

create something and sell it, making her short of money? Then

she will realize the hardships to make something as well as

the vexation we feel when someone takes what we have made

after making so much effort ourselves without permission.

　つまり、他人のものを無断で取るということは、その人の気持ちを

踏みにじる行為なのだということを身をもって思い知らせるのよ。」

We must let her know that taking others’ things without

permission equals trampling on their feelings.”
