美しい国日本への提言

知る人ぞ知るゲーテの名作ですが、若い読者の間で自殺者が続出した
という「いわくつき」だけに、若い頃は読むのが怖かったといいますか、
躊躇していました。
As you all know, it is known to be one of the most famous master-
pieces written by Goethe. As I knew the rumor that it has a somehow
mysterious history where it has driven not a few young readers to
commit suicide, I was afraid and hesitated to read the work when
I was young.

でも、もう別に若くもないし、そういう意味ではたぶん自殺もしないと
思うので（笑）、読んでみることにしました。といっても、私が興味を
持っているのは、この小説の内容というよりはむしろ模範的なドイツ語
というものなのです。若きゲーテによる素晴らしいドイツ語で書かれた
小説という噂を信じて（？）、是非この模範的なドイツ語を、統語論的に
分析してみたいと思い始めました。
Now that I got enough old, I don't think I should commit suicide
just because of this novel, ;-) so I decided to read it. I am rather
interested in "typical" German than the story of this novel itself
and I'd like to syntactically analyze the excellent German written
by young Goethe.

フロイトのように、ドイツ語の原文と日本語訳とをつきあわせて読んで
みようと思い、月曜日（１／23）の朝くまざわ書店に電話注文しようと
思ったところ、ずいぶんと待たされた挙句に、日本語訳のほうは在庫が
あるが、ドイツ語の原文は出版社に在庫がない、との返事。
As I intended to read it both in Japanese and German simultaneously
just like Jigmund Freud, I called the nearest branch of Kumazawa
book store and tried to order a copy of the German original text
in the morning of January 23rd. After all, I just received such a
strange answer that there were no such copies in stock at any of
its publishing companies.

これほど有名な作品の在庫がないなんてことがあるのでしょうか？
真面目に問い合わせたのかどうかも疑わしいいい加減な仕事ぶりだと少し
イラつきました。
What? How could that be true that there should not be any copies of
such a famous work??? I felt a little annoyed, doubting if they
seriously inquired or not.

九州大学生だった頃は、洋書はいつも、天神の紀伊国屋で入手していた
ものですが、紀伊国屋に匹敵するような大型書店で、しかも、洋書も少な
からず置いてあるのをみかけただけにがっかりしました。以前楽譜に関して
質問したときには、ネット検索までしてくれるような親切な若い店員さんが
いたものですが、こんな大型書店ですから、ドイツ語の洋書の検索くらい
速やかにやってのける店員さんがいても良さそうなものだと思いましたが、
ほんとうに困りますね。
When I was a student at Kyushu University, I often bought
books written in German at Kinokuniya book store in Tenjin.
I felt rather disappointed because the Kumazawa branch store was
almost as large-scale as the Kinokuniya branch store, with not a
few foreign books which seemed to be unfortunately written only in
English. They should have stationed at least one clerk who are
able enough to manage to order a German book as soon as possible
at such a large book store, shouldn't they?

で、結局、１月28日の土曜日の夕方、高橋義孝訳の日本語版だけ入手したの
ですが、店頭でもう一度ドイツ語版の注文は出来ないのかと尋ねてみましたが
やっぱりダメ。別の若い店員さんはなんとも覚束ない様子でちょっと
イライラしました。洋書専門の店員さんはいらっしゃらないのですか？
ドイツ語がお読みになれないのでしたら代わりに検索して差し上げましょう
か？とついに喉元まで出かけました。
When I went to the store to get the Japanese translation by Yoshitaka
Takahashi in the evening of January 28th, I asked them again to order
a copy of the German original text. But I just received the same
answer. A young female clerk in charge, who ran a computer search
so clumsily, was a little annoying. "Aren't there any clerks who are
in charge of foreign books stationed at this store? Shall I run the
search for you if you can't read the German language?" Such words
were on the very tip of my tongue.
